Follow Essentials week by week

Choose your community's cycle, see which Essentials week communities are on, and open a week's grammar and writing videos.

Each published Essentials week has its own page, with grammar and writing videos for that week. Start at the Essentials page.

Choose your community's cycle

Pick a cycle from Community cycle. Only cycles Toka has published are listed.

  • Grammar (EEL) works through the same 24 weeks every year, whichever cycle it is.

  • Writing (IEW) uses a different book in each cycle, so each cycle's weeks differ.

A cycle is your community's year, not how many times your student has been through EEL.

If Toka picked the cycle for you and it may not be your community's, the page says so. Choose yours from the list.

Which week are communities on?

When communities are partway through a published cycle, Where communities are now shows the same week range as the Foundations page. Essentials meets on the same day as Foundations, so the two share a calendar.

Pick a different cycle from the one communities are on, and the highlight hides. It also hides over the summer.

Find a week

The weeks are listed fall then spring, with a grammar cell and a writing cell for each:

  • A lesson title: click it to go straight to that part of the week.

  • Material being added: the week is out, but its videos are still being chosen.

  • Not published yet: Toka's editors haven't released it yet, so it can't be opened.

Further down the page's book list, Back to the Essentials weeks brings you back to the weeks.

Move around a week's page

A week page has two sections, English grammar (EEL) then Writing (IEW). Use Jump to a section to jump between them.

  • For the parent: under Go deeper, look for For parents.

  • Earlier weeks: Study mode brings them into review, as on Foundations. See study modes.

These pages never show your guide's text, charts or writing assignments. Keep your own Essentials guide and IEW book close.

Suggest a video

Signed in, click Suggest a video in a section to suggest a YouTube video. A moderator reviews it before it appears on the page.
