Read a book or PDF online

Open a free reading copy or a PDF in Toka's reader, find your way around it, and pick up where you left off.

Many older books and printable resources can be read right in your browser. Look for the Read online section on a resource page.

Choose a reading copy

The Read online section lists each copy we know of. Each button says what kind it is:

  • Read free opens a free scan from the Internet Archive.

  • Read PDF opens a PDF in Toka's own reader.

  • Borrow to read opens a lending-library scan.

A borrowed book needs a free archive.org account, and it may be out on loan to another reader. Toka does not host these copies — they stay with the library or publisher that made them.

Read a PDF

A resource that is a PDF has a Read PDF button near its title. It opens in Toka's reader, with a toolbar along the top:

  1. Click Previous page or Next page, or type a number into the page box.

  2. Use Zoom in and Zoom out, or switch between Fit to width and Fit whole page.

  3. Open the sidebar to see Page thumbnails or the Table of contents, and click one to jump there.

If the reader does not load, click Open PDF in a new tab to view it in your browser instead.

Use the keyboard

The Keyboard shortcuts button lists every shortcut the reader knows:

  • ↑ and ↓ turn the page, once you have used a page control.

  • Home and End jump to the first and last page.

  • + and - zoom in and out.

The arrow keys wait until you have clicked a page control, so they still scroll normally until then.

Pick up where you left off

The reader remembers your page. Come back later and the book or PDF opens where you stopped.

On a shared computer, your place is kept in this browser. Once you are signed in, it is also saved to your account, so it follows you to another device.

Listen while you read

Some books also have an audiobook on Toka. Click Listen to the audiobook while you read to follow along with the recording while the pages stay on screen.
