Share chores out fairly

Balance chores across the family by age and schedule, set up turns for shared jobs, and cover a missed chore.

A fair split keeps chores from becoming a daily argument. The chore list has two tools for sharing out: Balance chores and Taking turns.

Balance the load

Select Balance chores on the chore list. Toka suggests who does what from everyone's age and schedule.

  • Each person's load shows as minutes a week against a limit for their age. A name at its limit is flagged.

  • Move a chore with the Move… menu beside it. Chores you move are marked You chose this and stay put if you rebalance.

  • More than the children should carry is set aside for the Grown-ups.

Select Use this schedule to keep it, or Start over to throw away your changes.

Why the limits? Children do more when their share fits their age, and the limits keep one willing helper from quietly carrying everyone's jobs.

Take turns on a shared chore

For a job everyone shares, like emptying the dishwasher, set up a turn-taking group.

  1. Select Taking turns, then Set up a group.

  2. Fill in Name this group.

  3. Under Who takes turns, select Add someone for each person. List order is turn order.

  4. Select Save.

A chore that rotates shows a Taking turns badge on the list, with who is next. Changing who's in a group changes whose turn comes next, while chores already on the planner keep their owner.

See how it's going

After a few weeks, How it's going appears above the list. It may suggest a bigger or smaller share for someone. Choose Yes, adjust or Leave it as it is.

Cover a missed chore

A chore left undone past its time shows a swap icon on the day page. Select it, then Ask someone else to hand it on for today, or Skip this one.
