Language practice activities

Edit a lesson's language practice, choose which of its parts each block shows, and place copies of it in other sections.

A language practice activity gathers a lesson's words, dialogue, speaking prompts and drills into one block. Edit it as a whole, show only some of its parts, or place a copy elsewhere in the lesson.

Edit a practice activity

Click Edit practice on the block to change its goal, teaching points, words, dialogue, prompts, memory drill, number practice and sound pairs. Record each word's sound there too.

  • Quick check questions have their own quiz button beside the block.

  • Clear both drill fields to remove the drill.

  • Add the drill's pinyin, one line per line of text, to give students a pinyin switch. It starts hidden. If the line counts differ, the editor warns you and it shows as one block.

  • Untick a word's pinyin box to fade the support: its flashcard then shows only the characters, with the pinyin and meaning on the back.

  • Number practice draws new numbers every round, leaning on zeros, 二 or 两, and numbers past 万 and 亿. Your example numbers always stay in the mix.

Numbers students hear

Tick Hear it, write the digits and students type each number they hear in digits. It asks only numbers you record: record three or more, and pick tricky ones (zeros, 两, numbers past 万).

  • Record my examples adds unrecorded examples within your range. Add recording adds one more.

  • Remove a recording and it leaves students' review.

Tones shown as shades

Students can turn on Color by tone beside the words, the dialogue and a story's captions. Each character then takes its tone's shade: red, green, blue and purple for the four tones, paler for neutral.

  • It follows the written tone, as a dictionary does. 你好 shows two 3rd tones, though it is said ní hǎo.

  • Words with pinyin unticked stay plain, since the shade would give the tone away. Flashcards and the drill stay plain too.

  • A word that stays plain while it's on has pinyin that doesn't match its characters, or no tone marks. Check its pinyin.

Choose which parts a block shows

Parts shown is the first group in the editor.

  • Every part, in the usual order shows everything the activity holds, and parts Toka adds later. Games never appear here.

  • Only the parts I choose opens a checklist. Tick the parts to show and use the arrows to set their order.

Each part carries the heading your students see. A part marked (nothing in this lesson yet) has nothing to show yet, such as a dialogue part before you write the dialogue. You can still tick it, and it appears once you fill it in.

Place a copy in another section

Split one lesson's practice across its sections, with the words in one and the dialogue in another.

  1. Click Place a copy of this practice on the block. The copy appears at the end of the same section, with its editor open.

  2. Tick the parts this copy should show, then save.

  3. Send the copy to another section with Move to section….

Copies are separate. Editing the words in one doesn't change the other, so edit each copy you want changed. The editor reminds you when a lesson holds more than one practice activity.

A copy leaves out the Quick check and Number sprint. Students review what they miss in both, and two blocks showing them would put the same questions in their review twice. Tick them back if you need to — the editor warns you when another activity in the lesson already shows them.
