Language practice games

Add a game to a lesson's practice, and see what it can use.

Games are practice parts, built from what an activity already holds. They show only where you place them.

Add a game

Games are listed after the other parts in Parts shown. Games show only when you choose them.

  1. Choose Only the parts I choose.

  2. Tick the game, and use the arrows to set where it plays.

Give a game its own activity. Click Place a copy of this practice, tick only the game, and move the copy to a later section. Students then can't read the answers off the words list just above it.

  • Ungraded. A missed word comes back at the end of the round.

  • Each recording plays by itself in Tone Detective, Listen and choose and Sound pairs, and students can't answer until it finishes. Trim silence from the start and end of your recordings so nobody waits.

  • Two use your dialogue: Build the sentence and Role-play.

  • Nothing is saved, and nothing goes into a student's review.

Tone Detective

Students play a word without seeing it, then pick the tone they heard. A two-syllable word asks for both tones. Then the word, its pinyin and its meaning appear.

  • It uses your recorded words of one or two syllables, from the new words and the spiral review.

  • It needs three before students see it.

  • Changing tones are left out: two 3rd tones (你好 is said ní hǎo), and 一 or 不 before another syllable.

  • A neutral tone alone, like 吗, is left out too. It has no tone of its own to hear.

  • Your preview lists them under the game, each with its reason.

Listen and choose

Students play one of your recorded words with nothing written on screen, then pick its meaning or its characters from four cards. Then the word, its pinyin and its meaning appear.

  • It uses your recorded words from the new words and the spiral review. Words with no recording still appear as choices.

  • Record at least three, and give it other words to offer beside them. Your preview says which it needs.

  • No two sound-alikes: it never offers two words that sound exactly the same, such as 他 and 她 (both tā). Words that differ only by tone, like 妈 and 马, stay in: that's the hearing it trains.

  • It mixes two questions: "What does it mean?" and "Which word did you hear?"

Sound pairs

Students hear one of two sounds that are easy to mix up, then pick which it was. Then both appear, each with its recording, so students can compare them.

  • Add the pairs yourself, under Sound pairs in the practice editor, with Add pair. They don't come from the lesson's words.

  • Change one sound only: zhī and chī, sì and shì, fàn and fàng, or one syllable in two tones, like mā and mà. Two sides that sound the same can't be saved.

  • Record both sides yourself. A pair can't be saved without both recordings.

  • Characters are optional. Students see them only after they answer, so they can't read the answer off the screen.

  • Add at least two pairs before students see it.

  • Up to five pairs a round, each both ways. Add more pairs and each round draws a different set.
