Take a family course yourself

Join a course your family has published and work through it as yourself, with your own progress and your own review.

You can take any course your family has published, and your progress is your own. Learn alongside your children, at your own pace.

Join a course

  1. Open your courses.

  2. Under Courses you can join, find the course you want.

  3. Click Join.

The course moves up to Courses I'm taking, with its lessons ready to open.

  • Published courses only. A draft appears once its author publishes it.

  • A teen's own course isn't offered. Those are for the children it was made for.

Study a lesson

  1. Under Courses I'm taking, click a lesson.

  2. Read the first section, then click Continue for the next.

Sections open one at a time, the same as for your children. Back on your courses page, every lesson you finish is ticked and counted.

  • Your best score on each knowledge check is saved. Click Retake to try a check again.

  • A lesson with a minimum score isn't finished until you reach it. It reads "Needs" with the minimum, and you can still move on.

Print a worksheet

A lesson can hold a PDF or a writing worksheet to print.

  1. Click Open to open it in a new tab, or Download to save it.

  2. Print from your browser's PDF viewer.

  • The paper is your print page size, Letter or A4, and the card says which. To switch, change it once on your profile: see print page size.

  • The learner's name is on the sheet, so print each child's copy from that child's own view of the lesson. The card says whose name it will carry.

  • The date is left blank, so sheets printed ahead stay right: your child writes the day they do it.

Review what you missed

A question or number you miss comes back in later lessons. They open on a short Quick review before the first section.

  • Skip it with Skip review to go straight to the lesson.

  • Nothing is lost by skipping. What you didn't answer comes back next time.

Classmates and friends

Turn on Show me to classmates on the course page to be listed for its other learners.

  • Add friend asks a classmate to be friends. A child's parent approves first.

  • Friends see lesson counts and last-studied dates. Never scores.

  • Your own course shows you no classmates.

Leave a course

  1. Click the course's title under Courses I'm taking to open its page.

  2. Under Adults taking this course, click Leave course beside your name, then confirm.

Your progress is kept. The course shows up again under Courses you can join — click Rejoin to pick up where you left off.

A course someone invited you to

A course from another family sits under Courses I'm taking like any other. See Join a course someone invited you to.

  • Not available right now — the course is paused for a moment, by its author or while Toka reviews it. Your progress waits for you.

  • Leaving keeps your progress, but coming back needs a new link from its author.

  • Teens can leave one on their own, from their Courses page.

What a co-parent sees

A co-parent sees your name, lesson count and percentage on the course page — never your scores. Only you can study as yourself, tick your lessons or leave the course — and the same goes for theirs.

Report a course someone shared with you

If a course someone invited you to has something wrong in it, click Report this course on the course page. Pick a reason and add a few words about what you saw.

A Toka moderator reads every report. Reporting is private: the course's author is not told who reported it.
